The New Space Opera

Crystal 3

Tracks: Literary
Types: Panel

Russ Colchamiro (moderator), vikki ciaffone, Peter Prellwitz, Fran Wilde, N.E. Lilly

The original definition of Space Opera was “a hacky, grinding, stinking, outworn, spaceship yarn” (WIlliam Tucker, 1941).  When did that change, and how does the new Space Opera differ?  Are Space Westerns inherently Space Opera, and does all Space Opera have a Western flavor?

6pm

The Great Big Library of Everything

Plaza 2

Tracks: Literary
Types: Panel

Sally Wiener Grotta (moderator), John Ashmead, Scheherazade Jackson, Kathryn Sullivan, Fran Wilde

Libraries as a nexus of all human knowledge have appeared in speculative fiction from Borges’s Library of Babel, to the L-space of Terry Pratchett’s DISCWORLD, and Genevieve Cogman’s THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY. This panel will explore the many facets of this powerful metaphor
